2009 Updates

March 2009:  I had a wonderful day today.  As usual Maverick made many people smile today while working as a Therapy Dog.  When we got home we switched to training mode and enlisted the assistance of Nika, Phoebe, Foxi, Apache, and Anika to train our little girl Caiya.  Caiya is making wonderful progress with her training.  We are very proud of her.

INTRODUCING DJ VON HIGHLANDER

We would like to introduce DJ Von Highlander (Maverick/Nika son) to you.  DJ will eventually be part of our breeding program.  He has a wonderful personality.  We introduced him to Pet Therapy with his Dad Maverick at a local nursing home when he was only 4 months old… he was right at home in that role and we saw even at that age he is a natural!

Tisha

The newest member of Highlander German Shepherds has arrived:

V Leticia vom Frankengold, SchH 1, Therapy Dog affectionately known as Tisha

Tisha arrived from Germany over a month ago and we are absolutely in love with her!  She received a very warm welcome from the entire Highlander Family (human, canine, and feline) and fits in perfectly!  Prior to her arrival Tisha worked as a Therapy Dog in a German hospital.  As per Highlander German Shepherds tradition we are very eager to start her animal assisted therapy work here; Tisha’s preparation/training to become a Service Dog is already under way.

Hero

We would like to take a moment to remember and honor a true hero,  Roy Chelsen, Firefighter 1st Grade, NYFD rest in peace 01/09/11

On 9/11, Roy Chelsen, of Engine 28 NYFD rushed dozens of firefighters out of the World Trade Center’s north tower moments before it collapsed, saving their lives.

Then he stayed on at Ground Zero, spending weeks digging through the rubble in an attempt to rescue those burried beneath.

He was later diagnosed with incurable bone-marrow cancer linked to his time there. Please see the “Be A Hero” page for more info and how you can help save the lives of others.

Thank you Roy for all that you did and for making the world a much better place.  You will be missed.  Our prayers are with you.
