WELCOME TO HIGHLANDER GERMAN SHEPHERDS WHERE OUR DOGS ARE VERY SPECIAL MEMBERS OF OUR FAMILY! They have been carefully chosen for type and temperament. A joy to live with and love, they have been lovingly nurtured in our home and are very confident and outgoing. Their kennel is our home and this we very willingly share with them. Highlander German Shepherd puppies are raised in the same way, in our home as a part of our family because of this our puppies go out into the world loving people confidently and easily embedding themselves in their new owner's hearts. Our home and lives are built around our dogs that are catered to in every way.
We are located in New York two hours south of Albany in Dutchess County. Our dogs are a vital part of our family. They do not live in a kennel, they are FAMILY raised and loved!
We have 35 plus years of experience with German Shepherds that include Police K9, Narcotic Detection, Search and Rescue, Advanced Obedience Training, Personal Protection, as well as loving family companions dogs. We are very proud of our dogs and love them more than words can say.
A REASON TO BELIEVE
Before my Dad was a Homicide Detective he was a Police K9 Trainer/Handler. When he first started out in K9, he went to pick out his dog at the county K9 HQ. Upon arrival he saw a striking black GSD named "Satan." Right then and there as their eyes met a bond was forever formed.
He told the appropriate people of his choice and there was a long silent pause followed by a suprising response. "I'm sorry Officer, that dog is no good, he's been through multiple handlers, and well ... there are no other options left he is going to be destroyed!" My father questioned this ... he was told that Satan was vicious and ferocious, no man could handle him, he has to be destroyed.
My Dad knew what he saw in Satan's eyes ... "a reason to believe" ... and he told them "NO! That is my dog, I will take him" and that is exactly what he did. He believed in Satan ... when nobody else did.
My father was right ... Satan was NOT vicious. He did however have a very significant history of physical abuse and inexcusable medical neglect! All Satan needed was the proper medical attention and a loving family - we gave that to him.
Not only was Satan a phenominal family dog but he went on to be the top Police K9 not only in the city but in the county as well! He had the highest numbers of narcotic finds as well successfull search and rescues compared to all of the other dogs in not only our county but the surrounding areas as well !!!!!!!!!
Do you know .............................. when my Dad went into the Bureau (became a Detective) the very same people that said that Satan had to be destroyed wanted my Dad to donate him back to the county K9 because he was such a highly recognized police dog and they could really use him! Of course you know he stayed with us .... family is family!
When we were in the dreaming phase of "Highlander German Shepherds" - Satan was the dog that we had in mind. He represented the ideal ... well rounded, unmatched intelligence, devotion, love, drive in all respects, strength, speed, confirmation, agility and the list goes on. That kind of well rounded dog is what Highlander German Shepherds is all about !
We do not mass produce puppies. We have a few select litters per year. This enables us to give each puppy the individual attention and human imprinting that he/she deserves. A tremendous amount of thought and consideration on our part is done before we will place one of our puppies in a new home. We feel placing a puppy is an adoption process and it is our responsibility to find the right match for each puppy.
Our dogs are trained for real life situations that being loving family companions, advanced obedience, therapy dogs, tracking, service dogs, and personal protection.
